today i heard part of a commencement speech given by journalist Fareed Zakaria to Harvard University graduates titled “Reasons for optimism in today’s world.”

in it, Zakaria puts current events (economic collapse, terrorism, etc) into a bit of historical perspective, basically reminding us that, relatively speaking, we’ve got it pretty good.

while it’s obvious that, as a commencement speech directed at the world’s future overlords, Zakaria’s message must be one of hope and optimism, i think he still has a very valid point. it’s helpful to keep things in perspective when it feels like all hope is lost.
