PANTERA’S BOX  12.30.2011

editing an email template so that it looks okay on a full range of email clients is like trying to juggle fifteen oil-coated ostrich eggs with only your left arm while wearing broken roller skates on black ice.

editing jQuery to me is like trying to find a particularly long earthworm in a bathtub full of slightly shorter earthworms while blindfolded and being mercilessly bitten by East African fleas.

A SHADOW OF GAMES  12.27.2011

Beka and i went to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie yesterday and it turned out to be surprisingly good. there’s nothing quite like the grittiness of Victorian London and the same goes for the uniquely charismatic Robert Downey Jr. who brings Sherlock Holmes to life in the most peculiar way.

ZED EX DOUBLE R  12.26.2011

look at what my brother Dan got me for Christmas!

it’s an official shirt from the now defunct Hayate Racing Team which carried on with the Ninja ZX-RR after Kawasaki withdrew from MotoGP at the end of 2008. Hayate’s existence only lasted for the 2009 MotoGP season during which they shut up their critics with an astounding second place finish by rider Marco Melandri at the French Grand Prix.

to me, Hayate embodied the true spirit of motorsport: they didn’t have the money, the factory support or even a terribly competitive bike but with sheer grit, determination, and talent, they managed to achieve some amazing results. watch out for them next year as they return to MotoGP under the Forward Racing banner with Colin Edwards on the BMW-powered Suter. i can’t wait.

i know i, for one, will be wearing this proudly at the Indianapolis Grand Prix next year.

in keeping with my tradition of only writing a new version of “twas the night before Christmas” on even-numbered years, here’s the one i wrote for Christmas 2010.

enjoy.

    ‘twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
    not one light was shining, save an optical mouse;
    the downloads were steady from the torrents a’seedin’,
    the screensaver a bouncing dodecahedron.

    young Bobby was nestled all snug in his bed,
    as hopeful suspicions danced in his head;
    what gifts would he get? some toys? maybe cash!
    little did he know, St. Nick was totally smashed.

    Santa had taken a shot…or three, or four
    of whiskey til drunk, he passed out on the floor;
    the elves tried to rouse him. but to their dismay,
    he’d chortle, roll over, start weeping and say:

    “git offa me, ya li’l stinkin’ pieces a’ coal.
    dun’y'know santa’s got things un’r control?”
    the elves listened wide-eyed, not making a peep,
    “i’ll take’care a’it” and with that, he fell back asleep.

    unfortunately for Bobby and all children in general,
    it was the booze talking during his waking ephemeral;
    the elves didn’t know better, so they left him alone,
    so there Santa slept, on the floor of his home;

    this time would be different from past years a’many,
    no kids would get presents, not one, not any;
    for no reindeer would fly under stars aflicker,
    all because Santa couldn’t hold his liquor.

i saw an “Elmo” piƱata for sale today which struck me as odd for the following reasons:

  • this product is clearly aimed at children who love Elmo and/or Sesame Street
  • adults who buy this for children will invariably pressure them into beating the lovable muppet with a stick until delicious candy comes out of its tattered corpse
THREE HERO’S KEYS  12.22.2011

having recently been given a Nintendo 3DS, i began playing The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords which came as a free download. i’ve seen Zelda games at my friends’ homes in the past but had never played any of them myself until now.

being a non-gamer, Zelda is frustrating. sure, it looks cute with its simple, cartoonish characters and top-down view but in reality, it transforms my Nintendo from a hand-held gaming console into a portable humiliation device.

to be fair, i’m pretty terrible at most video games, no matter how basic or childish they may seem and have suffered defeat after crushing defeat at the hands of Nintendo and its competitors ever since i first played Tetris in grade school.

that said, Zelda is becoming incrementally easier and easier for me every time i play. i think i’m even getting close to beating it!
