the garbage can in the kitchen broke a few days ago, the foot pedal finally giving out after almost a decade of faithful service. so what to do? buy another cheap white plastic bin for five bucks? or do i take that same five dollars and get a name brand metal trash can off some rich guy via Craigslist?

choice number two, good sir.

one of the rice bowls broke today but not because i slipped on a banana peel or smashed it over the head of an unlucky intruder. actually, absolutely nothing happened to it as far as i can tell. all i know is that Beka went to get a bowl this morning and it came apart in her hands.

as you can plainly see, an almost perfectly circular fracture formed around the base of the bowl causing a clean separation. in fact, the crack is so fine that it still forms a water tight seal when both pieces are put back together. how about that?

i had another busy day today if by “another busy day” you mean “a much-needed lazy day spent eating pizza and watching stuff.”

NO SNOW CONES AT 9PM  07.26.2011

today was my cousins’ last day in North America before flying back home to Hong Kong. over the course of their month-long stay, they’ve done everything from go-karting to going crazy at the supermarket. it’s been a lot of fun having them around but also very tiring (in a good way, of course).

that said, i very much look forward to doing absolutely nothing tomorrow.

ALMOST 30 TIMBITS  07.25.2011

got back to Chicago at around 3pm today after nine or so hours on the road. and as if that wasn’t enough, i went out and bought an enormous green papaya pretty much immediately afterward.

today was my last day in Canada for at least four months and it was a blast. tomorrow morning we’ll be leaving my two cousins who live here in Toronto to drive back to Chicago, another cousin will go back up to Wisconsin tomorrow night after dropping us off and the remaining two cousins will be returning to Hong Kong early Wednesday morning.

and then i really need to start getting more work done.

REFILLABLE PINEAPPLES  07.23.2011

sudden, heavy rains hit the good city of Toronto today as my cousins and i were walking around the Waterfront Night Market, an annual Taiwanese-style night market sponsored by a Chinese-Canadian grocery chain and held in the parking lot of one of its lakeside locations.

because of the weather, we spent most of the time huddled inside a vendor’s tent waiting for the rainstorm to let up. still fun, though.
