AN OLD MAGNAVOX  10.30.2009

i FINALLY found a working, reasonably priced flip clock at a thrift store today, something i’ve been looking for for about two years. now i plan to remove the clock mechanism from the housing and use it “naked” as a desk clock so i can marvel at all the gears and cogs while i procrastinate.

this all sounds great in my mind, of course, but how difficult will it be to extract the clock? how complicated will it be to wire it? how many times will i electrocute myself in the process? does anyone know how to treat second degree electrical burns?

OWEN SOUND PLATERS  10.29.2009

i watched the Chicago Blackhawks take on the Nashville Predators on television tonight which makes it the first NHL game i’ve watched in about 10 years. other highlights include seeing a black hockey player for the first time and watching him score a goal. nice!

while i was in Camboda, i was thumbing through a ridiculous wad of bills (about 4,000 Cambodian riels = 1 US dollar) when i got a good look at the back of the 500 riel bill. i saw a depiction of the Kizuna bridge spanning the Mekong river, symbolizing a modern Cambodia but a second, closer look revealed two tiny (identical) cars on the bridge. recognize it? it’s the Honda (Acura) NSX.

aside from the fact that only a relative handful of people in Cambodia can actually afford one, how spectacular is it that the Honda NSX has made it onto legal tender?

today i experienced one of my more painful visits to the Chinese doctor. the pain was so intense that i could hardly breathe at times but it hurts so good that i keep going back for more.

PITY ABOUT THE BONNET  10.25.2009

congratulations today to Sébastien Loeb for claiming his sixth consecutive World Rally Championship in Wales and to Valentino Rossi who clinched his ninth Motorcycle Grand Prix World Championship in Malaysia. what an age we live in!

Beka and i arrived at a housewarming party tonight with nothing in hand but managed to leave with a package of hot dogs, an unopened bag of much-needed hot dog buns, a paper plate of chapchae and a ziplock bag of Filipino egg rolls. what a deal.

steve: i dont know how to use this electronic keypad to lock my friend’s apartment

ivan: try playing tic-tac-toe against yourself

ivan: that usually works

steve: but it keeps talking to you

steve: thats the annoying part

steve: in korean

ivan: try to reason with it!

ivan: it’s the only way

steve: i don’t think it’s bilingual

steve: i’m just going to read a book and doze off
